Israel demolishes two Palestinian homes in occupied West Bank

  • The Israeli army has demolished the homes of two Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli military says the homes of Mohammed Mahamra and Khaled Mahamra were destroyed on Thursday. The two were allegedly involved in a June attack in Tel Aviv. Critics believe the demolitions amount to collective punishment.
  • The US and Israel are inching closer to a deal on Washington’s new multibillion-dollar military aid package for Tel-Aviv. According to a senior US official, the two sides have resolved many of the differences and hope to reach a final deal soon. Israel is the largest recipient of US foreign aid.
  • Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh has urged his followers to financially support the Kingdom’s troops in fighting against Yemen. The Grand Mufti said helping the soldiers with money is a great deed. Saudi Arabia has been waging a devastating war against Yemen since March 2015.
  • South Africa's ruling African National Congress is leading its rivals as vote counting is underway following municipal elections. With a quarter of the votes counted so far, the ANC has a 50 percent lead over its rivals. Final nationwide results are expected Friday.
  • The United Nations says over two million people have been displaced in South Sudan since 2013. The UN called on the warring sides to immediately end the conflict as well as their attacks on civilians. The warning follows weeks of renewed fierce fighting in the capital Juba.
  • A woman has been killed and five other people have been wounded after a man attacked them with a knife in London. The knife-wielding man was arrested at the scene. Police say terrorism is among the possible motives behind the attack.
  • Iran’s judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani has suggested that Iran and Europe hold talks on human rights. Larijani said the primary condition for holding such discussions must be equal chances for each side to question the other. He also slammed the West over its double standards on human rights.
  • The UN Security Council has condemned North Korea’s latest ballistic missile launch. Envoys from Japan, the US and South Korea have also strongly slammed the North’s move. Pyongyang says its missiles launches are a response to what it calls provocative measures by Washington and Seoul.
