The running mate of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, Mike Pence, says he will back House Speaker Paul Ryan in the upcoming Wisconsin primary despite his boss’s assertion the he would go for the lawmaker’s rival.
The Indiana governor, whose selection by Trump was meant to bring unity back to the Republican Party, told Fox News on Wednesday afternoon that he would back the Wisconsin lawmaker enthusiastically.
“I strongly support Paul Ryan, strongly endorse his reelection,” Pence said, describing him as a “longtime friend” and “strong conservative leader.”
“I believe we need Paul Ryan in leadership in the Congress of the United States to rebuild our military, to strengthen our economy and to ensure that we have the kind of leadership in this country that will make America great again,” he said, echoing Trump’s campaign slogan.
This is while the New York billionaire said Tuesday that he would endorse Ryan’s rival, Paul Nehlen, in the next Tuesday primary.
“I like Paul, but these are horrible times for our country,” Trump said. “We need very strong leadership. We need very, very strong leadership. And I’m just not quite there yet. I’m not quite there yet.”
Pence, on the other hand, said he had discussed the endorsement with the Republican nominee.
"He strongly encouraged me to endorse Paul Ryan in next Tuesday’s primary," Pence said, "and I’m pleased to do it."
