WWIII closer than Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962: Analyst

Breakout of a third world war is closer now than the 13 days of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, an analyst says.

In his interview with Press TV on Saturday, political commentator and radio host Don Debar was commenting on remarks by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, warning the nation of a President Donald Trump, having access to the country’s nuclear codes.

"A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons… Just ask yourself: You really think Donald Trump has the temperament to be commander in chief?" Clinton said during her nomination speech on the last day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. “Imagine if you dare, imagine him in the Oval Office facing a real crisis.”

According to DeBar, the world is already treading in the path of a world war while Clinton is “ignorant of the facts” and makes “absurd” comments.

“At the moment, the US, through NATO, is following Clinton’s policy of reset with Russia and the pivot to China that has military forces deployed from the Baltics to the Korean Peninsula and beyond,” he said, describing the moves as a “raid against Russia and China.”

“German tanks rolled through Poland, for example, about a month and a half ago to the Russian border,” while weapons systems that were outlawed by a treaty more than 40 years ago were used, he noted.

“War games have been ongoing since the beginning of this year and… they look exactly like invasions through Russia and China,” said the New York-based commentator. “Anti-missile systems are among those that have been turned on in the vicinity of Russian borders, for example in Bulgaria.”

Debar concluded that “the danger of having a nuclear war is a consequence of policy that Clinton set in motion that was a continuation of the policy, initiated by her husband [President Bill Clinton] in 1993,” adding that the situation “brings us closer to World War III than we have been since the October of 1962,” when the US and Soviet Union were about to confront one another due to Soviet ballistic missile deployment in Cuba.

Clinton’s warning against Trump’s presidency echoed a speech by First Lady Michelle Obama, who also referred to the nuclear codes and tacitly slammed the Republican presidential nominee’s penchant for twitter fights.

"I want … someone who understands that the issues a president faces are not black and white and cannot be boiled down to 140 characters," Obama said on the first day of the convention. "Because when you have the nuclear codes at your fingertips and the military in your command, you can't make snap decisions. You can't have a thin skin or tendency to lash out. You need to be steady and measured and well-informed."
