Turkey’s failed coup

The coup in Turkey has been discussed from many angles since it happened and was defeated some seven days ago. But little has been said about its impact on Turkey’s relations with what now can be called Ankara’s once strong ally, that is, the US. Some observers maintain that the military revolt and Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s victory in the showdown with the rebellious officers changed the geopolitical landscape and realigned Ankara with Moscow while shattering Washington’s plan to redraw the map of the Middle East. They say Washington’s disregard for the national security interests of its allies has pushed the Turkish president into Moscow’s camp.

Israel racism

Israel is pressing ahead with its racist policies toward Arabs: Members of the Knesset have passed a controversial law that could lead to the expulsion of lawmakers for supporting violence, racism and armed struggle against Israel. Many believe the law is solely aimed at Arab members of the Knesset, as reflected in the comments by the Israeli Prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu: “The law would end the absurd situation whereby someone who supports terror against Israel and its citizens can serve as a member of parliament.”

India-Pakistan tensions

The crackdown in Indian-administered Kashmir has sent shockwaves beyond the borders of the Himalayan region, causing tensions between old-time arch-enemies India and Pakistan to flare up.  India has lashed out at Pakistan, accusing Islamabad of supporting terrorism after a day of solidarity with Kashmir was observed by Pakistanis following the deadly violence in the disputed region. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif earlier announced a “black day” to support Kashmir’s residents living under Indian rule. India’s Union home minister Rajnath Singh said if terrorism is in India then it is due to Pakistan which is sponsoring terrorism. Pakistan is conspiring to disturb the situation in the Kashmir valley in the name of the religion.
