40 years ago, NASA landed the first US spacecraft on Mars. To this day, they have every reason to celebrate the huge moment in the history of space exploration.

The ‘Viking 1’ was the first ever craft to land on Mars on July 20, 1976. Its main goal was to search for evidence of life on the planet.

While none was found, the craft did give scientists some close-up view of what Mars was really like, including new information about its soil, its weather and its surface features.

The “Viking 1” also made history by becoming the first spacecraft to stay on the planet for a long time. It was designed to operate there for 90 days. But it ended up functioning for six and a half years.
