Erdogan vows to finish cleansing military

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (R) speaks in Istanbul on July 16, 2016.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says many of those involved in a coup attempt in the country are being arrested, vowing he will not leave Turkey to "occupiers".

Erdogan made the remarks in a speech broadcast live on TV in Istanbul early on Saturday, shortly after his plane landed at the Ataturk International Airport and hours after a coup attempt by a faction of the Turkish military.

The Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) said in a statement on Saturday that the coup was “repelled” and the situation was restored to “normal.”

“What is being perpetrated is a treason and a rebellion. They will pay a heavy price for this act of treason,” Erdogan said at Istanbul's airport.

The Turkish president, who was greeted by hundreds of his supporters outside the airport upon his arrival, added that the coup plotters tried to attack the country's solidarity and unity, but no power would be above the national will.

He went on to say that he would not go anywhere and would stay with his people.

Erdogan further stated that the coup was carried out by a minority group within the military, and thus, it would be a reason to clean up the army.

Meanwhile, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has ordered the military to shoot down aircraft hijacked by the coup plotters. He also announced that over 130 suspects had been arrested over the coup attempt.

Erdogan further said that his hotel in the Aegean coast resort of Marmaris was bombed after he left there, AFP reported.
