Theresa May chosen by UK establishment: Journalists

The establishment comprising the rich and powerful figures in London has made the choice of Theresa May as the new British prime minister, an investigative journalist says.

May is Britain’s second ever female prime minister after Margaret Thatcher. She succeeds David Cameron, who announced his resignation last month, a day after people in the UK voted to leave the European Union.

"They had Andrea Leadsom who was standing against May, but the rival was bullied by the Murdoch empire. So, it was not a proper election," UK-based journalist Tony Gosling told Press TV on Thursday night, referring to media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

Gosling also expressed concern about the fact that Theresa May’s husband, Philip John May, is a big shareholder in American defense area like Lockheed Martin, saying he makes money from war.

"So, the decision-making in Britain could be poisoned by people who can earn money from conflicts," Gosling said.

However, the worst decision, which has been made in the new British cabinet, is Liam Fox who is from the far-right wing of the Conservative Party.

Gosling noted that Fox, as the former secretary of state for defense, had called for an attack on Iran in 2011. "It is incredible that Theresa May wants to bring back the hawkish politician to power."

The journalist also noted that Prime Minister May has a terrible record with the UK Border Agency because she has called for abolishing the agency.

"Hundreds of millions of pounds were spent on some kind of IT system to check immigration into the country, but all that tax-payers’ money is still not working," Gosling said.

Robert Evans, a former member of the European Parliament, said May is "very competent," adding "she has been putting a fresh picture of the British cabinet because she has chosen a number of new faces."

Evans ruled out the idea that May is the establishment’s choice. He said the Conservative Party had a short list of candidates and May was the best of a bad bunch.
