More alienation awaits UK Muslims under May: Pundit

May “has been known for her xenophobic and Islamophobic tendencies and over the last years of her position as the Home Secretary she has actually committed new acts which are purely Islamophobic,” says Massoud Shadjareh, who heads the Islamic Human Rights Commission.

The new British Prime Minister Theresa May has a penchant for Islamophobic policies and Muslim communities in the UK are going to have difficulty under her rule, says Massoud Shadjareh, the head of the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) in London.

May “has been known for her xenophobic and Islamophobic tendencies and over the last years of her position as the Home Secretary she has actually committed new acts which are purely Islamophobic,” Shadjareh told Press TV on Thursday.

May, who succeeded David Cameron as prime minister on Wednesday, has pledged to fight extremism by promoting British values like the freedom of speech, the very right she took from Muslim students in British universities by proposing the so-called Counter Terrorism and Security Bill in November 2014.

The bill, which was later passed by the UK parliament, kept Muslim students from voicing their opinions in lectures and seminars for fear of being accused of extremism.

The abuse did not end there as the bill soon gave rise to Islamophobia by framing terrorism as a “Muslim problem,” according to The Independent.

“As a whole, she has actually given a perception that Muslims are problem and they should be excluded,” Shadjareh said.

Deporting immigrants based on parameters like the color of their skin was another racist act on May’s part that Shadjareh said has proven her anti-Islamic inclinations, according to the IHRC head.

May has drawn a lot of criticism for calling immigration the real threat to the UK’s national cohesion.

She has also threatened to deport European migrants already living in Britain after the country’s complete departure from the European Union (EU).

“It really is all coming to one conclusion that those who are from a different culture or a different color and indeed on top of that the Muslim community is going toward a hard and difficult time,” Shadjareh noted.

IHRC dubbed May as the "Islamophobe of the Year" last year, after thousands of voters chose her from a list of possible contenders.
