A powerful earthquake, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale, has hit northern Ecuador, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) says, with no information immediately available about potential casualties or damage.

The USGS said the quake struck at a depth of 35 km (22 miles) late Sunday, adding that its epicenter was 41 kilometers (25.5 miles) south of the town of Propicia — which lies next to the quake-rattled coastal town of Esmeraldas — and 154 kilometers (96 miles) northwest of the capital, Quito.

No tsunami warning has been issued after the quake.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake also hit the same area in April, killing more than 650 people. Most of the victims were killed in the cities of Portoviejo and Manta.

Some 16,600 people were also injured in the quake and 25,000 people were forced into shelters.

Some 7,000 buildings were destroyed.

In May, the country was hit by two successive quakes measuring 6.7 and 6.8, which left one person dead.
