EU ‘must wait’ for Britain to decide on Brexit, Tusk says

European Council President Donald Tusk arrives before an EU summit meeting on June 28, 2016 at the European Union headquarters in Brussels on June 28, 2016.

Britain is still a full member of the European Union, says the head of the European Council, asserting that the EU “must wait” for the country to decide if it really wants to exit the bloc.

Up until the filing the Article 50 of Lisbon Treaty, Britain remains an EU member, Donald Tusk said on Polish TVN24 on Thursday.

"The European Union must wait for the British government to decide whether it wants to leave the union or whether it wants to stay in it," Tusk said.

Britons voted to exit the EU on June 23, with 52 percent (17.4 million) of British voters optin for Brexit and roughly 48 percent (16.14 million) of people voted to stay in the union.

Tusk referred to the Out campaigners’ narrow win as a “very sad thing," describing the decision a "very serious mistake."

Brexit has rattled the UK economy, making Britain's treasury chief to hold meetings with senior figures in the banking sector, among other things, in an attempt to ensure confidence in markets.

On Thursday, George Osborne met with top officials from Goldman Sachs, Standard Chartered, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan and Bank of America Merrill Lynch,

They released a joint statement, stressing that London should be helped to “retain its position as the leading international financial center" after the British exit.
