Press TV has conducted an interview with James Jatras, a former US Senate foreign policy analyst from Washington, about a report by Amnesty International in which the organization accuses the US and its Middle Eastern allies of supporting terrorist groups in Syria.
The following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: What do you think happened exactly that Amnesty International points the finger at the United States, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey?
Jatras: I can’t be sure what the reason for their timing is. It’s certainly a welcome report from them especially the time when the Obama administration is really stepping up its efforts to protect these very groups under the so-called cessation of hostilities.
Remember these are the so-called Ahrar al-Sham and some of these other groups among the so-called moderate terrorists that are very mixed up with the al-Nusra Front, the local al-Qaeda affiliate, which is also in the report here. And it’s really crucial that the Obama administration stops supporting these terrorists. These are simply criminals. And I think this report makes that clear.
Press TV: How likely are we going to see the Obama administration stop supporting these terrorists, when at the same time we hear constantly coming out of Washington the need to be vigilant against terrorism and here they’re actually supporting some of the most vicious terrorist groups in the region?
Jatras: That’s absolutely right and unfortunate part of the problem is that there’s such a close collusion between the administration and the mainstream media here in the United States, is that I don’t think that this report will get the kind of the coverage, the kind of the prominence it should get, when the administration makes an accusation whether true or not against the Syrian government. Oh, that’s banner headlines. Everybody has to hear about it, but when something like this comes out and shows how dirty their hands are, you hear the crickets chirping, you get very little coverage of it.
