Press TV has conducted an interview with veteran politician and former Labour MP George Galloway from London and Derek Conway, a former Conservative MP from Newcastle, to discuss Britain's Labour Party's deep divide.
Galloway believes that some elements within the shadow cabinet are annoyed by Labour Party’s remarkable victories under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn over the past nine months and, hence, are trying to mount “a coup” against him to hinder his growing power.
“There's no doubt about that. The only question is the timing. The embittered Blair-right rump have never accepted the election of Jeremy Corbyn.
“He came out of nowhere and won an overwhelming victory just nine months ago and they have never reconciled themselves to that fact. They have been planning this coup from the day and hour that he was elected if not even before,” Galloway argued.
He further noted that these efforts by Labour MPs just aim at obscuring the ugly view of Chilcot report and the likely impeachment of former prime minister Tony Blair over his alleged role in misleading Parliament about the Iraq war.
Conway, however, said Corbyn is not a leader capable of leading Labour Party towards victory and that is what frightens his colleagues "because they can’t see much of their active political career being spent in the wilderness of the opposition benches."
“I don't think the British public will buy his brand of politics. It's a genuine brand of politics but it is actually wrong and you just have to look at the state of Venezuela to realize how wrong it is,” Conway said.
