4 US children fatally stabbed, mom arrested
A US mother is in police custody after her four children, all under age 6, have been stabbed to death in Memphis, Tennessee, officials say.
Police officers arrived at a gated apartment complex Friday after a neighbor, who was aware of the incident, had called the Shelby County Sheriff's Office before 1 p.m. local time.
The officers found four dead children, whom they called “babies,” according to sheriff's office spokesman Earle Farrell.
"This is an egregious act of evil that has shocked us to our core. I will never understand how anyone can do this," said county Sheriff Bill Oldham.
According to a source, a 7-year-old child had escaped the scene, but Oldham said it was unclear whether somebody else had been at the home
“One of the kids got out and alerted one of the neighbors who alerted the police of what was going on,” a resident said.
Neighbor Sean Ahearn said that the kids "were very open and friendly,” adding, "It's just a terrible, terrible thing."
Police did not provide further details about whether the mother was facing any charges and said that the investigation was still in a very preliminary stage.
A similar incident happened in 2008, when a man killed six people in the city, including two children, aged 2 and 4.
Jessie Dotson fatally shot his brother during an argument at a house. He then attacked everyone else in the house with a gun, boards and knives in order to kill all of the witnesses.
Three other children, including a 2-month-old girl and 9-year-old boy, were also stabbed, but they all survived.
