Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani says the United States and its Western allies are not interested in the settlement of the ongoing row between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Addressing a conference in Tehran on Tuesday, Larijani added that Washington and its Western allies outwardly express concern over the conflict between Tehran and Riyadh but they, in fact, refrain from conducting “practical measures” to solve it.
The creation of crises in the Middle East has turned into a regular policy for them, he added.
Tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia intensified after the kingdom's execution of prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr in January.
Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties and halted flights to and from Iran on January 3 following attacks on vacant Saudi diplomatic premises in the Iranian capital and the city of Mashhad by angry people protesting Nimr's execution.
This came as more than 2,400 foreign pilgrims, including 464 Iranians, were killed after two large masses of pilgrims converged at a crossroads in Mina, near the holy Saudi city of Mecca, during the symbolic ceremony of the stoning of Satan in Jamarat on September 24, 2015.
“It seems that Saudi Arabia, due to its lack of success in Yemen and in the region, has grown disillusioned in some ways with their diplomatic approaches which shows that it has no choice but to continue with crisis in the region,” Larijani said.
The top Iranian parliamentarian emphasized that Riyadh has provided “some disgraced” groups with much funds and facilities to create chaos inside Iran.
He noted that the main objective behind the increasing terrorist moves is to raise doubt inside Iran about the country’s grandeur in political and security areas.
“The overall influential factors in the region whether be big powers or regional powers and the manner of their approaches show that terrorism in the region will not be a short-term phenomenon and that we are faced with at least a mid-term terrorist crisis in the region,” Larijani said.
He stressed the importance of adopting “new strategies” to thwart plots against the country.
