Two killed in California fire, thousands evacuated

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Foreign ministers of founding EU members want the Brexit process to start as soon as possible. This was announced after an emergency meeting in Berlin following the UK’s decision to leave the bloc. Germany is also set to hold a meeting with France and Italy to discuss EU reforms.
     
  • A shooting in the French city of Marseille has left two people dead and a teenage girl wounded. According to police sources, an unknown assailant opened fire on a car in a parking lot. Marseille is known for gang wars between criminal groups.
     
  • A shooting in the US state of Maryland has left three people dead and two others wounded. A massive search is underway for the assailant. This is the latest in a series of gun violence incidents in the US. Earlier this month, a mass shooting in Florida left at least 49 dead.
     
  • Saudi Arabia has launched fresh airstrikes on Yemen, causing heavy damage to property. The latest bombardments have targeted a market and residential buildings in the provinces of Ta’izz and Jawf. More than 9,400 Yemenis have been killed in the Saudi war since March last year.
     
  • Condemnations continue to pour in over Bahrain’s revocation of the citizenship of a top Shia cleric. People in Iraq, Indian-controlled Kashmir and Nigeria called unethical the Al Khalifah regime’s measure against Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim, saying it will further intensify the social unrest in the Persian Gulf kingdom.
     
  • At least four civilians have been killed and over a dozen others injured in a car bomb attack in the Libyan city of Benghazi. The bomb exploded near the al-Jalaa hospital where Libyan forces battling militants are being treated. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
     
  • Pope Francis has held a prayer service at a memorial site in Armenia commemorating Armenians killed by Ottoman Turks during World War I. The leader of the Roman Catholic Church has declared the Ottoman-era massacre as a planned genocide.
     
  • A massive wildfire has killed at least two people in the US State of California. The fast-moving fires prompted authorities to evacuate thousands of residents in Kern County. It’s one of a series of fires in southwestern US states brought about by long-running drought.
