Thousands of Yogis around the world are literally bending over backwards to highlight International Yoga Day.

The respective event in Yoga’s birthplace, India, was more colorful with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading a mass class.

Elsewhere in the world, Yoga enthusiasts rolled out their mats to bring a tranquil discipline to otherwise chaotic places such as New York’s Times Square and Beijing’s biggest park Chaoyang. While Yoga is an ancient tradition, International Yoga Day is only celebrating its second birthday.

The longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere was chosen for the occasion after Modi’s call on the UN for a universal day to observe this physical, mental and spiritual practice. Yoga is associated with peace, spirituality and balance.
