A car bomb has killed at least six Jordanian soldiers and left 14 others injured in an attack on their post on the Syrian border, security officials say.

The car bomb, launched Tuesday from the Syrian side of the border, targeted border guards in the Rukban refugee camp on the Syrian border.

A security official said the casualties were a "preliminary toll." The army said that it had destroyed several "enemy" vehicles at the border, but gave no further details.

The attack came in the remote desert northeast of the kingdom where tens of thousands of Syrian refugees have sought shelter in a makeshift camp just across an informal border crossing between the two countries.

Jordanian authorities have kept hundreds of refugees camped in no-man's land outside Rukban waiting for screening. The country is a leading member of the US-led coalition, carrying out airstrikes in Syria since 2014.

Jordan has also opened up the Prince Hassan airbase, northeast of the capital, to other members of the coalition taking part in air operations.

The Arab country is further home to militants which the US and its allies train for fighting in Syria and stands accused of supporting those fighting to topple the Syrian government.

This is the second attack targeting Jordanian forces this month. Five intelligence officers were killed in an attack on their office at the Baqa’a refugee camp which houses Palestinians outside the capital, Amman.

One of Jordanian pilots was captured by Daesh when his plane went down in Syria in December 2014. In February 2015, the Takfiri group released gruesome footage of Maaz al-Kassasbeh being burned alive in a cage.
