US presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has fired his campaign manager Corey Lewandowski as he is facing increasing challenges in pivoting toward the November election.
“The Donald J Trump Campaign for President, which has set a historic record in the Republican primary having received almost 14 million votes, has today announced that Corey Lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign,” Campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks said in a statement on Monday.
“The campaign is grateful to Corey for his hard work and dedication and we wish him the best in the future,” she added.
Lewandowski was reportedly informed of his dismissal on Monday morning and surprised at Trump’s decision.
Lewandowski led Trump’s campaign from the beginning and was credited with the real estate mogul’s initial victories in the primaries. He, however, has been recently sidelined with more experienced figures including chief strategist Paul Manafort.
Lewandowski and Manafort were reportedly engaged in a power struggle over the control of the campaign over the past few months. According to a campaign source, Lewandowski also had a conflict with the campaign spokeswoman that Ivanka, Trump’s daughter, did not like.
Another sources also said that Lewandowski had clashed with Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, in recent weeks.
A recent survey showed that Trump chipped away at presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s national lead. Clinton was ahead with 45.5 percent support against Trump’s 34.8 percent, while 19.7 percent picked neither candidate. That's down from Clinton’s 14.3-point lead in the previous poll.
