The French capital Paris is preparing to host the opening match of the UEFA European Championship 2016 amid heightened security.

The tournament kicks off on Friday at the Stade de France with the hosts facing Romania. The month-long event is expected to draw about seven million fans.

A total of 51 matches will be played at ten stadiums across France. Organizers say there will be fan zones in different cities including at the capital’s iconic Eiffel Tower where some 100,000 people are expected to gather on match days to watch the games on giant TV screens.

More than 90,000 police, soldiers and private security agents will be deployed to ensure the safety during the tournament.
