Iran slams US double standards towards terrorism

  • Iran’s Foreign Ministry has accused the US of being behind the growth of terrorism worldwide by adopting double standards in dealing with the issue. The ministry was reacting to the US State Department’s annual report on global terrorism which has labeled Tehran the top state sponsor of terrorism.
     
  • China has once again accused the US of escalating tensions in the disputed South China Sea. Chinese defense officials say Beijing doesn’t fear trouble over its territorial disputes in the wake of US provocations. The remarks came after Washington warned China against establishing an air defense zone over the Sea.
     
  • Forces loyal to Libya’s unity government have taken control of an air base from Daesh terrorists south of the city of Sirte. Three soldiers were killed in the battle for Ghardabiya air base. Libyan forces have been engaged in an operation to liberate Sirte over the past few weeks.
     
  • The bodies of 20 refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean have been washed up on Libya’s western coast. Officials are trying to identify the bodies found in the city of Zuwara. Over the past week, hundreds of refugees trying to reach Italy from North Africa have died in boat accidents.
     
  • Israeli authorities extend the administrative detention of two Palestinian politicians for six months. The two, who have been held in Israeli jails since June 2015, are leaders of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Israel accuses the organization of incitement against Tel Aviv.
     
  • Supporters and opponents of refugees have staged rival rallies in the German city of Dortmund. Police forces have been deployed to the protest site to quell the possible violence. Germany has witnessed an upsurge in such rallies since 2015 when over a million asylum seekers entered the country.
     
  • Rival rallies have turned violent in the British city of Bristol after far-right protesters and anti-fascist groups clashed with each other. The far-right protesters urged London to stop taking in refugees while anti-fascist demonstrators said Bristol has no tolerance for fascism and racism. Police intervened to separate the two sides.
     
  • Brush fires have hit several parts of southern California, forcing evacuations in Calabasas, Los Angeles County. Multiple structures have been damaged and dozens more are threatened by fire. Firefighters are battling the blaze. The fire has been fueled by excessive heat waves and dry winds in the area.
