Nuclear disaster in US highly possible: Analyst

“If there is even a semblance or a puff of smoke or an artificial explosion that is generated and the panic that is communicated in the airwaves and the internet can cause the Americans to be very malleable, very easily manipulated and easily politically directed,” Bennett says.

The vulnerable nature of America’s nuclear plants paves the way for a nuclear disaster that can be exploited for political means, says a former US Army member.

Scott Bennett, a former US Army psychological warfare officer, made the comments in the wake of a recent report by the National Academies of Sciences that states 96 nuclear facilities in the United States are unsafe and insecure due to risks from terrorism and sabotage.

“In looking at the general concept of nuclear facilities the American people have had a long history of skepticism if not outright fear of nuclear facilities and their potential for creating a nuclear wasteland in once-pristine parts of the United States,” Bennett said.

Contamination of the ground water, dangers for their surroundings, healthcare costs, maintenance and lack of security were some of the general concerns Bennett said Americans have about the country’s many nuclear plants.

Terrorist attacks or malicious employees can also pose great dangers to the facilities, according to the National Academies of Sciences.

Political interests and behind the scene relations between big companies and federal authorities necessitated a more thorough investigation of the matter, Bennett noted.

“We are seeing America fall into a Kleptocracy oligarchy, where corporate interests and large business interests are trumping the natural environmental interests and the natural sociological interests of people,” the analyst said.

Bennett warned that a nuclear disaster in the US is not a far-off possibility and the federal approach does not guarantee the safety of American nuclear facilities, especially in the face of possible terrorist attacks.

“The Americans shouldn’t be naïve that a nuclear disaster has been a long-term on the books for a potential terrorist act or a false terrorist act,” he said, adding that such false attacks could be used for political purposes.

“If there is even a semblance or a puff of smoke or an artificial explosion that is generated and the panic that is communicated in the airwaves and the internet can cause the Americans to be very malleable, very easily manipulated and easily politically directed,” he explained.
