New UK Navy ships will scare off foes: Officials
The United Kingdom has unveiled two vast new aircraft carriers which, officials say, could be used in fighting against the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group and make potential enemies "think twice" before starting a war with Britain.
The new Queen Elizabeth Class carriers that would be able to strike more than one hundred airstrike sorties per day are expected to be ready for the first deployment in 2021, according to the Navy.
“It's about stopping wars rather than starting them," said Captain Simon Petitt, senior naval officer for the two ships. “But if someone wants to start a war they may think twice when they see these ships coming over the horizon.”
Petitt said the 67,000-ton vessels will have some of the most striking weapons in the British naval arsenal.
He said the Navy “couldn’t wait” to see the return of carriers, which would offer “military options and political choice.”
The UK Navy will start the sea trial of the first of the two vessels next year. Its sister ship, the Prince of Wales, would also be ready around 18 months later. The warships are being constructed by an army of around 10,000 workers.
The captain further noted that the British Navy would “certainly” use the carriers in fighting against Daesh in Iraq and Syria.
Britain joined the so-called US-led coalition against Deash in December last year.
The United Kingdom has been without aircraft carriers since 2010, when the Navy discarded the Invincible Class vessels for cost cutting.
