200,000 flee Sri Lanka’s flood-affected capital
More than 200,000 people have been forced to flee the Sri Lankan capital Colombo as flooding caused by days of heavy rain hampered relief operations.
The national Disaster Management Center said on Friday that people were transferred from the capital overnight in an operation led by the military that involved helicopters and boats.
Flooding and landslides hit several parts of Sri Lanka, killing at least 63 people. Reports also said that over 400,000 people have been forces to flee homes for relief camps.
At least three people were killed in flood-related incidents in Colombo.
Government officials have urged people living in affected areas to leave immediately.
The capital’s northeastern Kegalle region has been worst hit. Some 34 people have died from two separate landslides in the region since Tuesday evening.
A regional police officer said that some 144 people, including 37 children, are missing. The officer also said that there was no hope to find any survivors from the landslides that buried three villages.
