A powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake has hit western Ecuador, one month after a deadly temblor killed some 660 people.

Ecuador's National Geological Institute said the quake struck Manabi region at 2:57 local time on Wednesday.

Its epicenter was 58km south of Esmeraldas at a depth of 10 km.

The US Geographical Survey said there was no tsunami threat from the quake.

It was not immediately clear whether the quake had any casualties or damages.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake also hit the same side of the South American country last month.

Some 16,600 people were injured in the quake and 25,000 people were forced into shelters. Some 7,000 buildings were also destroyed. Most of the victims were killed in the cities of Portoviejo and Manta.
