Press TV has interviewed Kaveh Afrasiabi, an author and political scientist in Boston, about lawmakers in Iran’s parliament (Majlis) drafting a motion obliging the government to claim compensation from the United States for its crimes against the Iranian nation.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: First of all I would like to get your opinion on this motion issued by Iranian lawmakers.

Afrasiabi: Well it is definitely very timely and reflects the desire and interest of the Iranian people who are represented by this legislative body - the Iranian parliament - that has taken note of sea of anger that has been generated in Iran as a result of the recent US Supreme Court decision awarding the victims of 1983 bombing in Beirut which had nothing to do with Iran as well as a number of other cases that are brewing in US courts that are very ominous and promised to hit Iran with more punishing penalties in terms of billions of dollars of Iranian assets which Iran considers to be an outright heist and we heard President Rouhani just the other day stating that Iran intends to take the United States to the International Court over this most recent two billion dollar case and I imagine that the administration of President Rouhani will welcome this initiative by the parliament that sends a very strong signal to the United States that this two-way process and Iranian people are legitimately seeking damages for all that has been done wrong to them by the United States over decades.

Press TV: And what kind of a response are you expecting to see from the US with regards to this motion?

Afrasiabi: Well the United States is a hegemonic absolutist power that considers itself above law and above any blame and we saw that in the arrogant behavior after the downing of the Iranian passenger airplane awarding the captain of that USS Vincennes and other things, so I do not expect any nod from the US. That does not matter. What matters is that Iran should take legal action, should impress the international community on its legitimate grievances and that will in turn instigate heat on the US government to see that its actions in its courts [are] self-seeking and damaging to a whole set of things including the nuclear accord.
