Minsk talks restarted

Top diplomats from Germany, Russia, Ukraine and France - the so-called Normandy Format - met in Berlin this past Wednesday to discuss the latest situation in eastern Ukraine. The talks resulted in several agreements aimed at improving the security in the restive region where fighting between pro-Russian forces and local troops has left thousands killed. But the delegates were unable to reach a deal on holding local elections which is seen as a key step in ending the conflict there. Ukraine says Russia’s position at the talks had prevented the deal which is crucial in implementation of the 2015 Minsk peace agreement.

Iraqi officials say the military campaign against Daesh has retaken around two-thirds of the territory seized by the militants in 2014. And that the group’s control has shrunk to 14 percent of the Iraqi territory from 40 percent.
