Iran beach volleyball teams crowned in Rio qualifiers

The national Iranian men’s A and B beach volleyball teams have performed remarkably in the second round of the Asian Beach Volleyball Olympic Qualification Tournament in Thailand, and finished as the champions of the three-day tournament.

Iran A pair of Rahman Raoufi and Bahman Salemi got off to a strong start against Chinese opponents in their last encounter held in Thailand’s northeastern city of Kalasin on Saturday, and finished the first set 21-18.

However, the East Asian side could establish itself in the second clash with the Persians, and came from behind and claim the set 21-18.

The Iranian squad managed to regain the lead and assert its dominance as the match went into the third set. Raoufi and Salemi continued to exert good pressure on the opposite side and clinched it 15-11.

Moreover, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s team B, comprised of Bahman Gholipour and Abdulhamed Mirzaali, captured the men’s title 15-21, 21-19 and 17-15.

The second round of the Asian Beach Volleyball Olympic Qualification Tournament kicked off in Kalasin, northeast Thailand, on May 12, and concluded on May 14, 2016.

The final round of the qualification tournament is scheduled to be held in Australia between June 20 and June 26.

Australia, China, Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, New Zealand and Qatar have already secured their places in the event.
