Muslims are increasingly becoming targets of hate crime. So, how should Muslims respond?

Where there is genuine confusion about Islam and the values Muslims stand for, it becomes paramount for each Muslim to stand up and clarify the real message of Islam.

In such cases, it is vital that Muslims speak out and defend their religion.

However, the most effective manner of combating anti-Muslim sentiments, according to most scholars, is by practicing Islam in its real sense by embodying the values of Islam.

These include showing compassion and love to all people, caring for the sick, neighbors, the elderly and the orphans. It means announcing Islam to the world through our mannerism.

If only the media and the politicians didn’t hide the true Islam then we wouldn’t have this problem of anti-Muslim hatred.

Our focus on encouraging the piety of the individual Muslim in combating this problem takes the lens away from the fundamental problem that this hatred is structural.

It has been created by the establishment in a way that will allow ordinary people to manifest their hate in good old fashioned racist ways or in creative new ways.
