CIA tweets bin Laden killing, seeks Daesh head
The US spy agency, CIA, has posted its ‘live tweets’ on Twitter on the fifth anniversary of the killing of former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, while keeping an eye out for the head of Daesh (ISIL).
As the US Central Intelligence Agency live-tweeted a secret May 2, 2011 operation to take out bin Laden at his residence in Abbottabad, North Pakistan, CIA Director John Brennan warned on Sunday that al-Qaeda still remains a threat.
"We have destroyed a large part of al-Qaeda. It's not completely eliminated. So we have to stay focused on what it can do," Brennan told NBC's "Meet the Press" talk show.
In one tweet, the US Special Forces team said, “3:39 pm EDT - Osama Bin Ladin found on third floor and killed.”
In another, they told the US National Security gathering with President Barack Obama at the White House that the “team retrieves large quantity of materials from compound for intel analysis.”
Meanwhile, the US spy chief also made reference to Daesh, saying the terror group was not just an organization but a phenomenon.
"Now, with the new phenomenon of [ISIL], this is going to challenge us for years to come," Brennan added.
He also noted that taking out Daesh ringleader Ibrahim al-Samarrai, also known as Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, would be of great importance.
"He is important, and we will destroy ISIL; I have no doubt in my mind. We have to remove the leadership that directs the organization to carry out these horrific attacks," said the CIA chief.
"If we got Baghdadi, I think it would have a great impact on the organization. And it will be felt by them."
Daesh, which is notorious for its barbarity, heinous atrocities and sacrilegious acts, stands accused of committing gross human rights violations and war crimes in the areas it has overrun, particularly in Syria and Iraq. The group has used chemical weapons in both countries.
