Police arrest furious protesters at Trump rally

Anti-Trump protesters clash with police outside the California Republican Convention in Burlingame, California.

Furious protests have erupted in the US State of California as hundreds of demonstrators descended to protest the presence of Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump.

Five protesters were arrested on the second day of anti-Trump rallies in California. Reports say a sheriff’s deputy was injured during a protest in the San Francisco suburb of Burlingame. Trump spoke later in the day at the California Republican Convention there.

Rocks were thrown at officers and the protest grew tense at times, with police advancing with shields and batons and demonstrators flattening metal barriers and rushing to the hotel's entrance.

Some protesters were clad in black clothing, their faces covered with handkerchiefs. One protester yelled, “Mr. Hate, leave our state!”

The crowd of demonstrators however was kept away from entering the Hyatt Regency Hotel after police surrounded the perimeter of Trump's speech venue.

After Trump arrived, protesters took down a barrier and flooded the entrance outside the hotel, where police again blocked them from entering. They chanted, "Get him out."

Some supporters of Trump were pushed and kicked as they tried to cross through the crowd of protesters.

San Mateo resident Oscar Herrera, 19, said the protest was a success because Trump had to pull to the side of the road and cross a barrier to get to the convention. "We succeeded, man. We made Trump jump the border wall," he said.

The rowdy scene followed violence outside a rally that Trump held in Costa Mesa on Thursday evening when protesters bloodied several of his supporters.

Protests have disrupted Trump's rallies across the country for months now, but rarely escalated into mass street demonstrations. Many protest rallies have focused on Trump's rhetoric on illegal immigration.

Last month, Trump canceled an event in Chicago after protesters flooded the streets.
