Police in the US State of California have arrested some 20 demonstrators rallying outside a Donald Trump campaign event in the southern city of Costa Mesa.
The protesters were arrested on Thursday as the Republican presidential frontrunner was addressing supporters at a rally in the Orange County.
Demonstrators held signs as well as Mexican and US flags to protest against Trump’s immigration policy.
They smashed the window of a police car, marched in protest and blocked traffic as police in riot gear tried to disperse the crowd outside of Trump’s speech venue.
A CNN report said several scuffles broke out between Trump supporters who were leaving the rally and people in the streets who accused them of being racists. One Trump supporter was visibly bloodied after being punched in the face.
Trump has caused widespread anger among Latin Americans living in the US with his anti-migrant comments in recent months.
The Republican candidate reiterated a controversial promise on Thursday to build a wall along the Mexico-US border if he is elected president in order to stem the flow of illegal migrants into America.
He also lashed out again at Republican rival Ted Cruz and Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, calling the former “liar” and the latter “crooked.”
Trump’s speech in Costa Mesa marked the beginning of his election campaign in California, where he has high hopes that California’s June 7 primary will make him the Republican presidential nominee.
