Zarif, Kerry hold closed-door meeting in New York
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has met with his US counterpart John Kerry in New York.
"We agreed we're both working at making sure that the ... nuclear agreement is implemented in exactly the way that it is meant to be and that all the parties to that agreement get the benefits that they are supposed to get out of the agreement," Kerry told reports after the closed door meeting at the UN’s Manhattan headquarters on Tuesday.
Following the three-hour meeting, Zarif told reports that the talks had mostly focused on properly implementing the nuclear agreement so that “all parties especially the people of Iran reap the benefits which are rightfully theirs.”
He noted that talks with the US secretary of state on the correct implementation of the deal would continue on Friday.
Iran’s historical nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, was signed on July 14, 2015 following two and a half years of intensive talks between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China -- plus Germany.
According to US officials, Iran’s role in solving the five-year conflict in Syria that has claimed the lives of thousands of people was also discussed during the meeting.
Before the meeting, Zarif had said he would call on the US to ease restrictions on non-American banks doing business with Iran.
Zarif arrived in New York on Monday, along with Iranian Deputy Foreign Ministers Abbas Araqchi, Majid Takht-e Ravanchi, and other officials to attend a UN debate on Sustainable Development Goals and attend the signing ceremony of the Paris climate change agreement.
