Iran’s junior Kabaddi team wins Asian championship

National Iranian girls’ Kabaddi team has won the trophy at the fourth edition of Asian Junior Kabaddi Championship for Boys and Girls in the northwestern city of Urmia following a victory over a strong Indian side.

On Saturday evening, the Indian sportsmen opened the game at Urmia’s 6,000-seater Ghadir sports hall in a dominant fashion, and took advantage of the hosts’ weak points as the game progressed and eventually won the first set 9-8.

Young Iranian female athletes bounced back as the match extended into the second set. They availed of Indian players’ individual mistakes to notch up points, and ultimately secured a 20-16 win.

Later in the day, national Iranian boys’ Kabaddi team finished runner-up at the end of the fourth edition of Asian Junior Kabaddi Championship for Boys and Girls, slumping to the Indian squad 28-58.

The Iraqi and Sri Lankan boys’ and girls’ outfits claimed the third and fourth places respectively.

The fourth edition of the Asian Junior Kabaddi Championship for Boys and Girls, organized by the Kabaddi Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran, started in Urmia, Iran, on April 13, and finished on April 16, 2016.

Kabaddi is the national game of Bangladesh and also the state game of the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Punjab.

India has the most successful Kabaddi team on the world stage, having won every World Cup and Asian Games title so far, in both men’s and women’s categories.
