“Compassion” is the most frequently-occurring word in the Quran. Each of its 114 chapters, with the exception of the 9th, begins with the invocation “In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.”

As we strive to acquire these Godly traits, it is fair to say compassion seems to be in short supply in the selfish world we live in today.

Compassion is a vital ingredient in any society — for personal, communal as well as global development.

There were times when families and communities held a very strong relevance. People would not think twice about sacrificing their time and wealth to show compassion to one of their own who was less fortunate.
