US doctors perform first HIV positive liver transplant

Doctors perform 1st transplant of HIV positive liver.

US doctors perform the first ever liver transplant from an HIV positive donor to an HIV positive recipient.

Surgeons at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center announced that they successfully performed the transplant.

The patient who received the kidney and the liver, and the woman who donated her organs, have been living with HIV for more than 25 years.

There were previous cases of transplant surgeries performed on HIV positive patients, but the donors were HIV negative.

While many of the HIV infected patients suffer high risk of death on the waiting lists, doctors found that even HIV positives can donate their organs.

The surgery took place two weeks ago. The kidney recipient patient has been sent home. And the liver transplant patient is expected to be released in a few days.

HIV positive patients, who undergo transplants from HIV positives, are exposed to risk of a second strain of HIV from the donor. So, doctors consider these donors carefully and monitor them with special medications.
