‘US officials mount coups in different countries with impunity’

“I think the US government will not allow any of its leaders past and present, who were involved in the coups to go on trial," James Petras says.

US officials who have a hand in coups d’état in different countries are never tried as they commit such crimes with total impunity, says a political commentator.

James Petras made the remarks on Friday in an interview with Press TV when asked about President Barack Obama who has admitted the United States was "slow to speak out for human rights" after Argentina’s US-backed military coup brought the dictators to power.

Obama, who spoke Thursday at a ceremony at Remembrance Park in Buenos Aires to mark the 40th anniversary of the coup, stopped short of apologizing for Washington’s support for the military dictatorship.

“I think the evidence over the years proves that the US was actually involved in the coup, its military attaché in Buenos Aires was in on the planning of the coup, the timing of the coup,” Petras said.

“The fact that Obama’s visit coincides with the rise, the power of an extreme right-wing government, all comes against the apparent openness of the government of Obama during his visit” to the country, he noted.

Obama honored some 30,000 people who were killed or went missing during the 1976-1983 military regime, which declassified documents have showed was supported by Washington.

On Thursday, a large number of protesters burned US flags and held up signs reading “Obama go home” during a massive demonstration on the Plaza de Mayo, the main square located in front of the presidential palace.

Petras said “the fact that several hundred thousand people marched yesterday in commemoration of the victims of the US-backed coup was ignored by almost all the western media are underestimated by two-thirds and that testimony that Obama’s embrace of the current right-wing government is the continuation of the US policies that date back to the coup in 1976.”

“So I think very little has changed,” he said, adding, “I think the US government will not allow any of its leaders past and present, who were involved in the coups to go on trial, if that was the case, Hillary Clinton should be on trial for her support for the military coup in Honduras during her time as Secretary of State.”

“The US officials that are engaged in these coups act with total impunity,” he concluded.
