Iran thrash India 4-0 in 2018 World Cup qualifier

Iran thrash India 4-0 at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium in their group D encounter.

Over to the 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2019 AFC Asian Cup joint qualifiers where a pair of spot kicks from Ehsan Hajsafi has helped Iran thrash India 4-nil at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium in a group D encounter.

It was a one-sided affair from the early stages of the match on Thursday. The hosts had numerous chances to open the scoring before they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Alireza Jahanbakhsh in the box in the 33rd minute.

Captain Haj Safi made no mistake from the spot and sent India’s keeper the wrong way to make it 1-nil to Iran. Carlos Queiroz's men doubled their lead some 15 minutes into the second half through Sardar Azmoun who smashed home Hajsafi’s corner from close range.

The hosts won another penalty, this time for a handball. Hajsafi once again stepped up and converted the spot kick for a 3-nil lead. It was Jahanbakhsh who capped the comfortable 4-nil victory for the Asian giants 12 minutes from time as he made a run into the box from the right before sending his effort into the opposite corner.
