A top US Treasury Department official will be visiting China this week to discuss North Korea’s recent actions and new sanctions aimed at curbing Pyongyang’s "destabilizing behavior."

Adam Szubin, the US Treasury's acting under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, will travel to Beijing and Hong Kong on March 15 and 16 for discussions about sanctions against North Korea that were introduced by the US and adopted by the UN on March 2.

"This trip provides an important opportunity for discussions of ways to strengthen US-China coordination in response to North Korea's destabilizing behavior and to ensure sanctions targeting the North Korean regime are as effective as possible," the Treasury said on Monday.

The sanctions were a response to North’s fourth nuclear test in January, which was followed by an alleged satellite launch the next month.

The new bans blacklisted a number of North Korean officials and made it a requirement for all UN members to inspect cargo to and from North Korea, in all airports and seaports.

Additionally, the sanctions put restrictions on exports of coal, iron and iron ore and other minerals from North Korea, and prohibit the supply of aviation fuel including rocket fuel.

Washington says it takes seriously the nuclear threat posed by North Korea and will go on with its ongoing large-scale military exercises.

Pyongyang had threatened nuclear strikes against the US and South Korea if they went ahead with joint military drills scheduled on Monday.

South Korea and the US started their large-scale military exercises Monday with about 17,000 American troops and more than 300,000 South Koreans partaking in the two sets of annual war games dubbed “Foal Eagle” and “Key Resolve.”

Szubin is also slated to talk with both governments about efforts to cut the finances of Daesh (ISIL) and enforcement of US sanctions that remain in place on Iran, the Treasury said.
