Press TV has interviewed William Jones, a member of the Executive Intelligence Review in Leesburg, about China voicing concern over US plan to station long-range B-1 bombers in northern Australia, within striking distance of the disputed South China Sea.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: What is behind all of this happening in the South China Sea? We see this battle in the making now between China and the United States. Tell me your take on what is the bottom line with this?

Jones: Basically it is the US policy of containing China. Nobody is going to say that publicly at least from the US side but everything they are doing on the ground there indicates that China is a growing power, it is becoming economically very important, it is also building up its military forces in the region and the United States feels that it still is the great hegemon who must control world politics so they are pulling together all their friends and military allies to encircle China.

This is a situation extremely dangerous and we saw that in the early 20th century leading to World War I and we can see that this is becoming a more confrontational situation. China is becoming rather irritated about this given the comments from Hong Lei at the Foreign Ministry and more significantly the Foreign Minister Wang Yi in his press conference that pointed out that it is the US that is militarizing the South China Sea not China.

Press TV: Well what do you think has to happen in order for the US to back down because it seems that the situation is becoming more and more tense?

Jones: Well you have to create a different directionality. I mean the way it is going now you would call this a pre-war situation if it continues in this direction. China and the United States have large interest together, economic interest, trade interest and the like. If there were a conflict it would be damaging to both sides and I think for the US also it would lead to a complete distrust, more so that we have today of anything the US is doing. They would be seeing simply another imperial power trying to override the decision of any other nation.

So it would be damaging to the United States and would be contrary to the traditions of the United States as these were established by the Founding Fathers. There cannot be a different directionality but there has to be an intention from the United States government clearly express that they would like to work together with China.

For instance they could work together with regard to the Silk Road Economic Belt. China has offered the invitation but President Obama has been mum in terms of a response but there has to be change. If we continue in the direction we are going we know where it is going to lead, it is going to lead to war.
