North Korea fires projectiles into sea of Japan

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian has said that the Persian Gulf Arab states’ decision to declare Hezbollah a terrorist organization targets Lebanon’s unity and security. He added that the move, along with neglecting Israeli crimes, are mistakes that do not benefit security and stability in the Middle East.
     
  • In Turkey, two women carry out a grenade attack and shooting at a police station in the Bayrampasa district of Istanbul, before being killed by security forces. Local media say the two females had been trapped at a nearby building, as they were trying to escape.
     
  • A Russian body overseeing Syria’s ongoing truce has accused Turkey of trying to sabotage the peace process in the Arab country. The Russian Ceasefire Coordination Center in Syria says that shelling of northern Syria by Turkey is an act of provocation. The monitoring body says both government forces and the opposition are respecting the ceasefire.
     
  • 60 US Republican foreign policy veterans have released a letter in which they slammed Donald Trump for his proposals during the presidential campaign. The signatories say the proposals by the Republican frontrunner would undermine US security. They expressed concern that Trump’s use of presidential power against critics would threaten civil liberties.
     
  • A white US police officer has been charged in the fatal shooting of an African-American man. The shooting took place in city of Montgomery which has a long history of racial profiling. Officials say the officer shot the victim after an altercation broke out when he attempted to make an arrest.
     
  • Venezuelan police have clashed with protesters who have taken to the streets of the western city of San Cristobal to decry a court ruling that limits powers of the opposition-led parliament. The rally came a day after the Supreme Court ruled that the National Assembly’s oversight role is limited to the executive.
     
  • The South Korean Defense Ministry says North Korea has fired six short-range projectiles into the Sea of Japan. The projectiles were fired only hours after the UN Security Council imposed tough new sanctions on Pyongyang. The bans imposed late Wednesday were the toughest to date on North Korea.
     
  • A new study has found that climate change could cause food shortages which can lead to half a million extra deaths by 2050. The study also shows that people won’t be able to eat enough fruits and vegetables, with impoverished countries likely to suffer the most.
