Gianni Infantino elected as new FIFA president

New FIFA president Gianni Infantino holds his first press conference following his election in Zurich on February 26, 2016.

It took hours of politicking and 2 rounds of voting at an extraordinary congress in Zurich, before FIFA finally elected their new president Gianni Infantino.

The first round of voting, however, failed to find a winner, since no candidate secured the 2-thirds-majority needed, which meant that the winner had to be decided in the 2nd.

In the next round, Infantino won 115 votes, 27 more than 2nd place Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa of Bahrain. Meanwhile, Prince Ali bin al-Hussein received 4 votes, while Jerome champagne failed to get any at all.

The 45-year-old Swiss replaces former FIFA boss Sep Blatter, who led the world football's governing body since 1998. Blatter was forced to step down from his position last year amid allegations of corruption.
