Bomb blasts kill 50 in Syria's Homs

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Twin bomb blasts hit the Syrian city of Homs, killing at least 14 people. Many others have been wounded. Opposition sources have put the death toll at nearly 30. The central city of Homs is largely under government control and has regularly been the target of bomb attacks.
  • The US Air Force says one of its drones has crashed at a base in southern Afghanistan. The aircraft went down at Kandahar Airfield, but there were no casualties. American officials say they're investigating the incident, but have rejected the possibility of hostile fire.
  • A series of shootings in the US state of Michigan has left at least seven people dead and several others wounded. Police say they have a suspect in custody. The number of deadly shootings in the US has been on the rise in recent years.
  • American whistleblower Edward Snowden says he's willing to be extradited if the US guarantees that he would get a fair trial. Snowden said he wants to make a public interest defense and have jurors decide his case. He faces a 30-year jail term for leaking US government documents.
  • Thousands rally across the US to support a former police officer found guilty of killing a black man in 2014. The protesters believe the 28-year old Peter Liang is being made a scapegoat due to his Asian origin. The dismissed NYPD cop is facing up to 15 years in jail.
  • Anti-refugee protesters have staged a rally outside a mosque in the US city of Dallas. The protesters, which were heavily-armed, were reacting to an official decision to take in some 200 Syrian refugees. Anti-Islam and anti-refugee sentiment has been on the rise following a mass shooting in San Bernardino, California.
  • Police clash with protesters in the French city of Nantes over the extension of a state of emergency which was imposed after the Paris attacks. Police fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators who threw fire bombs at security forces. France has extended the state of emergency for another three months.
  • Supporters and opponents of refugees have taken to the streets in the Austrian city of Klagenfurt. Anti-refugee protesters gathered outside the local headquarters of the ruling Social Democratic Party to denounce the government’s asylum policies. A counter-demonstration was held meters away in support of asylum seekers.
