The British Ministry of Defense has confirmed that RAF Typhoons have been sent to intercept “ Russian bombers heading towards UK airspace.”

The warplanes were dispatched from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire on Wednesday afternoon following the security alert.

The RAF jets escorted the Russian bombers toward the North Sea, Sky News reported.

The  incident is the latest in a string of interceptions by British jets which were scrambled to escort Russian bombers skirting UK airspace.

The RAF has intercepted Russian bombers at least six times over the past 12 months.

Back in November, two Russian Tu-160 Blackjack bombers were intercepted by Typhoon jets after being detected flying over the Atlantic.

Britain’s airspace extends 12 miles from the UK coastline.
