Russia’s restrained reaction over US support for militants in Syria only emboldens the Americans in their efforts against Russia, says an analyst.
Moscow’s “reactions have been very tepid, very restrained, and that just emboldens and encourages the United States to continue selling more weapons, to continue videotaping and continue mercenaries to further attack Russians,” said Scott Bennett, former US Army psychological warfare officer.
The comments follow a recent report by the Daily Beast about evidence suggesting that US-backed militants in Syria are using American weapons to target senior Russian military officials in the country.
The so-called Free Syrian Army has recently released video footage showing a laser-guided BGM-71 TOWs anti-tank missile being fired at a rooftop where unidentified military personnel had gathered.
The video identified the targets as Russian officers but did not disclose the exact location of the attack apart from noting that it was somewhere near Syria’s coastal city of Latakia, where Russia has military bases.
“What Russia should do of course is tell the United States any of your weapons that are being used to kill Russians, we’re going to destroy them and we’re going to destroy the sellers of them,” Bennett told Press TV on Monday.
About an hour after the video was first released, TASS news agency reported that a Russian officer who had been advising the Syrian army had indeed been killed in Syria as a result of a Daesh mortar attack on a military garrison.
Turkey’s Anadolu news agency later confirmed that four Russian generals were among 15 officials killed in the Jabal al-Akrad strike in northern Latakia.
