The Indian Air Force (IAF) has placed an order for the only developing supersonic air-launched cruise missile in the world to become the first military power to be equipped with the state-of-the-art weaponry, known as the war-winning missile.
Officials at the BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture run by India and Russia, said on Friday that they had begun working on the BrahMos-2, an advanced version of a supersonic air-launched cruise missile, based on an order by the IAF.
The CEO of the company, Sudhir Kumar Mishra, said the advanced missile, which is planned to be integrated into the Sukhoi-30 MKI multi-role fighter jet, will be tested this year.
Mishra would not elaborate on how many missiles India had ordered and other details of the contract.
The Indian army is currently using the land version of BrahMos missile. The air version, which is powered by an air-breathing engine, will be the heaviest missile ever flown on a Su-30 and the jet is expected to undergo modifications to become capable of carrying the load.
BrahMos Aerospace has highly commended the missile with Sivathanu Pillai, the founder of the company, calling it "the war-winner missile." The supersonic cruise missile will be capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 7 or 5,238 miles per hour.
India owns a 50.5-percent share stake at BrahMos Aerospace, a company which started in 1998 taking its name from two rivers in India and Russia, namely Brahmaputra and the Moscow.
