Iranian freestyle wrestlers awarded 3 medals in Paris

Iranian freestyle wrestlers have earned three medals, among them one gold, in the 2016 Paris international wrestling tournament.

On Saturday, Iran’s Reza Atari overcame Venezuelan opponent Pedro Mejias 7-6 in his first encounter of men’s 57-kilogram weight category at INSEP, the famous Olympic training center situated just east of Paris.

He was also dominant in the next competitions, downing Adama Diata of Senegal 7-1 and Mongolian rival Batbold Nomin 14-2 to proceed to the ultimate contest.

He finally prevailed over Levan Metreveli, a contestant from Georgia, 8-2 and snatched the gold medal.

Additionally, Iran’s gold medalist at the 2014 Junior World Freestyle Wrestling Championships, Hassan Yazdani Cherati, sustained a narrow 6-7 defeat from Ali Shabanov, a representative from Belarus, in the last encounter of men’s 74-kilogram weight category and got the silver medal.

In the 97-kilogram weight section, Abbas Tahan managed to win a bronze medal for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The 2016 Paris international wrestling tournament began on January 29, and will finish on January 31. Tens of sportsmen and women from different countries are competing in the international tournament.
