Police in Italy have arrested two of the country’s most wanted mobsters in a mountain hiding years after they disappeared.

Giuseppe Crea, 37, and Giuseppe Ferraro, 47, were arrested by police on Friday near the town of Maropati located in the Province of Reggio Calabria in the Italian region of Calabria.

Prosecutor Federico Cafiero de Raho told reporters that the two “were living in a concrete bunker hidden by dense bushes and trees.”

“They were living like animals, a cold life cut off from society,” but still had enough connections to get their illegal activities done when necessary, Cafiero de Raho added.

Crea and Ferraro had been on the run since 1998 and 2006 respectively. The convicted pair has been linked to gangland murders and other crimes.

Ferraro was found guilty 18 years ago in absentia for a string of brutal murders and was always described by Italian authorities as “extremely dangerous.”

Crea was wanted for mafia association and extortion and is suspected of gunning down a rival’s son.

They are both high-ranking members of the immensely wealthy and powerful Ndrangheta family, which controls much of the world’s cocaine trade.

The mafia family managed to become the most powerful crime syndicate in Italy in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
