Iran hoopsters to face Mexicans, Greeks in FIBA Olympic qualifiers

The national Iranian men’s basketball team been drawn in Group A of the upcoming 2016 Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Italy.

During the official draw conducted at FIBA headquarters in the Swiss city of Mies on Tuesday, the Iranian outfit was put in Group A of the group stage of the sports event in Turin, and joined squads from Mexico and Greece.

Croatia, Italy, and Tunisia formed Group B in the forthcoming tournament.

The 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournaments for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will be held from July to 10 in Italy, the Philippines and Serbia.

A total of 18 teams have divided into three tournaments of six teams each, with the winner from each event qualifying for the Olympics.

The FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in the Serbian capital city of Belgrade has seen Angola, Puerto Rico and Serbia in Group A. The Czech Republic, Japan and Latvia are drawn in Group B.

While Canada, Senegal and Turkey compete in Group A of the Philippines event, the hosts will take on sportsmen from France and New Zealand in Group B.

Basketball matches at the 2016 Summer Olympics will be staged from August 6 to 21. The preliminary and knock-out matches for both men and women events will be played inside the first hall of the Olympic Training Center in Olympic Park.
