Heat wave in Argentina leads to major power cuts
A major heat wave in Argentina has led to widespread power cuts across the capital, Buenos Aires, and suburban areas, affecting nearly half a million people.
With temperatures reaching 97 degrees Fahrenheit around the capital on Friday, some 443,000 electricity customers had lost access to power, AP reported Saturday citing the Electricity National Regulatory Entity (ENRE) in Argentina.
The Argentinean capital and its outskirts are reportedly home to nearly a quarter of the country’s over 40 million population.
According to figures published on the website of the country’s weather service, Buenos Aires, with its nearly three million inhabitants, has a summer average of 90 deaths per day. For instance, during the heat wave at the beginning of 2001, the death toll for a single day went up to 250.
However, there have so far been no reports of casualties due to the current heat wave.
