JCPOA to pave way for closer Tehran-Baku ties: Rouhani

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says the lifting of anti-Iran sanctions as part of the nuclear agreement with world powers will pave the way for the promotion of Tehran-Baku relations.

Rouhani made the comments during a Thursday phone conversation with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev, who for his part congratulated Tehran on the implementation of the nuclear deal, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

He further expressed Tehran’s willingness for further enhancement of ties with Baku, stressing that there is no obstacle in the way of the expansion of economic, commercial and cultural relations between the two countries.

Aliyev, meanwhile, said that all of Iran’s friends in the region and around the world are pleased that the JCPOA has taken effect.

He highlighted the religious and historical commonalities between the two nations, calling for the development of ties with the Islamic Republic in all areas.

The Azeri leader also expressed hope that his future visit to Tehran would set the stage for the broadening of bilateral cooperation between the two sides.

On January 16, Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China - plus Germany started to implement the nuclear agreement they had reached in July 2015.

After JCPOA went into effect, all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran by the European Union, the United Nations Security Council and the United States were permanently lifted. Iran in return has put some limitations on its nuclear activities.
